Treating Problematic Symptoms

Different dental emergencies require different responses. Here is what to know about the most common situations we treat.

Toothache

A severe toothache is one of the most common reasons patients visit us for emergency care. Tooth pain can signal decay that has reached the nerve, a cracked tooth, or an abscess forming below the gum line. Do not wait -- untreated infections can spread quickly. Call us immediately and we will assess the cause and provide same-day relief whenever possible.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Time is critical when a tooth is knocked out. If you can, gently rinse the tooth without scrubbing it, place it back in the socket or keep it moist in milk, and call us immediately. The sooner you arrive, the better the chance of saving the tooth. Do not let more than an hour pass before seeking care.

Broken Tooth

Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any broken pieces you can find and bring them with you. Avoid chewing on that side and call us right away. We will assess the damage and determine whether a crown, bonding, or other treatment is needed.

Toothache

An infected tooth should never be ignored. Signs of an abscess include persistent throbbing pain, swelling in the jaw or face, a fever, or a bad taste in your mouth. Dental infections can spread to surrounding tissue and bone if left untreated. Call us immediately so we can drain the abscess and begin treatment.

Pain Relief

Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can help manage discomfort while you wait to be seen. Do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gum as this can cause tissue damage. A cold compress applied to the outside of your cheek can also help reduce swelling and pain temporarily.
